Street Artist

Our Urban Explorer

Could you please introduce yourself to our guests?

I am Alex Croft, a street artist based in Hong Kong.

How did you get into street art?

My journey into street art really began with my affinity towards break dancing and hip-hop music. From there, it opened up my eyes to the vibrant culture surrounding it which was how I got into graffiti. From there, I transitioned from graffiti to a broader exploration of street art, blending the two styles. I was also largely influenced by my dad growing up, who was an art teacher. I was always drawing and knew I wanted to pursue illustration, so I specialised in it during my foundation degree. While in university, my teachers encouraged me to explore photography, which led me to earn a bachelor’s degree in that field.

During my photography studies, I became fascinated by how street art and photography could intersect. I started to think about how I could use photography to enhance my street art practice. In the darkroom, I experimented with stencils, shining light through different layers to create unique images. This process sparked my creativity and led me to envision new ways of merging these art forms.

After finishing my degree, I returned to Hong Kong and quickly received commissions for my work. Initially, I viewed graffiti and street art as separate from my academic pursuits, but over time, I realized how intertwined they were. My experiences in university helped me elevate my approach, allowing me to blend my passion for street art with the professional techniques I’d learned. Everything came together in a way I hadn’t anticipated, and I’m excited to continue exploring this dynamic intersection of art.

How do you think you fit into the term” Urban Explorer”?

To me, the term “urban explorer” captures the essence of seeking out the hidden character of a city. It’s about paying attention to the older buildings and the lives of the people who inhabit them. I find inspiration in observing how locals live, the unique details of their neighbourhoods, and the stories that those spaces tell.

As I navigate through a city, I see it as a kind of game—discovering the charm in family-owned shops, small businesses, and the distinct features that give each area its personality. Each corner holds a piece of the city’s character, and it’s fascinating to uncover those layers. This exploration not only enriches my understanding of the place but also fuels my creativity as an artist. It’s about connecting with the soul of the city and celebrating the everyday lives of its residents.

What does a day in the life of Mr. Alex Croft look like?

My typical day is a mix of planning, creativity, and collaboration. I always start by looking ahead at upcoming projects, balancing both mural work and interior decoration. Having opened up my own interior decoration business ANB ART that specialises in special paint, Venetian plaster wall texture, decorative wall finishes for exterior and interior, the interior decoration projects have become a steady source of income for me in Hong Kong, which really helps me sustain my life here.

Finding Inspiration in the City

Could you tell us about the inspiration behind your famous Instagram wall in Central?

When I returned to Hong Kong after finishing my degree at Kingston University, I was excited to dive back into the local art scene. I was fortunate enough to receive a commission from a renowned locally based lifestyle brand Goods of Desire (G.O.D.), who had seen my street art around town. They reached out to discuss two walls they wanted to transform—one in Sai Kung and another in Central.

For the famous mural in Central, I was so inspired by a friend from school who would often talk about the Kowloon Walled City, and even though it had been demolished, I was fascinated by the stories and memories surrounding it.

I wanted to capture the essence of those old buildings and the unique atmosphere of the Walled City. Inspired by what I had learned from my friend, as well as having come across this beautiful photographic book by Canadian photographer Greg Girard called The City of Darkness, I decided to create a mural that depicted this lost piece of Hong Kong’s history. Surprisingly, it all came together beautifully, and I was thrilled with how the mural turned out. It felt like a meaningful tribute to a place that had such a profound impact on the city’s culture.

How are you enjoying this journey so far and what words of wisdom would you bestow upon those who wish to follow in your footsteps?

To be completely honest, it is tough, but perseverance is key. Stay interested in your craft and dedicate yourself to practicing. To truly stand out, you need to develop your own personal style, don’t just copy others. Embrace your uniqueness and trust your instincts, even when it feels challenging.

There will be times when work is scarce, or finances are tight. Prepare for those moments and don’t let them discourage you. Instead, focus on your ongoing development as an artist. In Hong Kong, where relying solely on art for income can be difficult, many artists diversify their income streams. It’s essential to have multiple sources of revenue.

Put yourself out there; visibility is crucial. If you create something fresh and unique, the right opportunities will come your way. Companies in Hong Kong appreciate originality and are often looking for artists who can help them stand out. So, cultivate your confidence and take your time to refine your style. Remember, art is a journey, and every step contributes to your growth. Stay committed, and the rewards will follow.

What else can we expect from Alex Croft coming up?

Coming up, I have a few exciting projects in the pipeline. I am in discussion for a potential collaboration with a hotel that could involve some street artwork, which I’m really looking forward to. Additionally, I’m planning an exhibition for March. While it’s not confirmed yet, I’m hopeful it will come together. Last year, I had a great experience doing an exhibition in March alongside my dad. We shared the space, inviting our friends and creating a lively atmosphere that was well-received. We’re aiming to make this an annual event, as it was such a rewarding experience. So, expect to see more of my work showcased soon, along with potential new collaborations. I’m excited about the creative opportunities ahead and can’t wait to share them with everyone.

Traveling with Purpose

Where do you find inspiration for travel?

My primary inspiration for travel is undoubtedly food; it plays a significant role in my journeys. However, art is equally important to me. I seek out exhibitions, galleries, and historical sites that offer a glimpse into the past. Exploring places rich in history adds depth to my travels and enhances my overall experience.

Any destinations on your bucket list?

America is certainly at the top of my travel bucket list. I would love to embark on a road trip across the country, experiencing its diverse landscapes and cultures. Additionally, I am drawn to Easter Island, with its mysterious ancient sculptures. The origins of these remarkable figures remain uncertain, but estimates suggest they may be between 800 and 1,000 years old. The island’s history is fascinating, particularly the tales of a devastating flood that led to the loss of much of its heritage and knowledge. I find this very fascinating! Aside from these places, I also find Egypt and Morocco very appealing, as they offer rich histories and vibrant cultures that I would like to explore more of.

If you had 3 words to describe the city, what would they be?

Buzzy, Intense, High energy
