Introducing our August Urban Explorer Mr. Gavin Yeung – an established editor by day and co-founder of Cantonese cocktail salon Kinsman by night. He is no stranger when it comes to the bustling F&B scene here in Hong Kong and as a renowned editor who truly understands the art of dining, his exquisite palate for fine cocktails is one that we can certainly trust. That is why we ask Gavin what his favourite bars in Hong Kong are at the moment. Read more now.

Kinsman

As Gavin says, “Kinsman is Hong Kong through and through”. Paying homage to the ever-changing times of the city, this Chinese cocktail salon is a must-visit for local residents or guests visiting from out of town. Here, you can be truly steeped in the flavour of Hong Kong. From its rich Cantonese spirits to the vibing music and interior design, you can find stories behind each and every cocktail.

The Savory Project

Gavin particularly enjoys hitting up this bar for a drink or two because of its modern aesthetic and savoury cocktails. Nestled on Staunton Street in the Soho area, The Savory Project ventures out of the standard “cocktail with a twist” concept and explores food-inspired recipes made with high-concept techniques and ingredients that can be easily found in the kitchen.

Avoca

Perched on the 38th floor of the Mondrian Hong Kong, this bar and restaurant serves up very unique and creative cocktails inspired by the city. The design is very vibrant and welcoming – not to mention you can get one of the best views of the famous skyline the city has to offer.

GOKAN

As a fan of Shingo Gokan, the founder of the renowned SG Bar in Tokyo and other exceptional bars across Okinawa and Shanghai, Gavin recommends you visit this newly opened cocktail bar on Ice House Street in Central. The drinks strike a perfect balance between traditional Japanese mixology and contemporary mixology.

Ping Pong 129

This Hong Kong-style speakeasy bar nestled in Sai Ying Pun, is a renowned bar that has been around for a while but as Gavin says it, it ages well and feels authentic in telling the story of Hong Kong. Its spacious, urban-chic interior and vibrant neon signs displayed inside is a perfect hidden gem for any cocktail lover seeking a sweet escape from the city bustle.
