“To me, an urban explorer is someone who is fascinated not only by what’s on the surface but digs deep down into understanding the history and stories of that place.”

Chinese embroidery has a long history since the Neolithic age and is so deeply rooted in Hong Kong’s culture – from art decorations and tapestries to womenswear. Hence, it was a great honour to learn more about this longstanding traditional art from Ms. Miru Wong, the third-generation owner of Sindart – a store specialising in colourful, hand-embroidered shoes and accessories founded by her grandfather in 1958. Miru fills us in on her favourite places around the city where travelers can truly appreciate the beauty and culture of Hong Kong. Read more now.
Sindart
The first stop on my list would be here because I would love to share my artwork, my stories and the history of Hong Kong with travelers from around the world.
Yu Chau Street, Shum Shui Po
This is one of my favourite areas of Hong Kong because it gives me so much inspiration for my embroidered artwork. Here, I can find all the beads and essential sewing supplies like threads and needles to get me started. The stores stock everything from fabrics to glass, which can be used for handmade jewellery, garments and even decorating gel nails.
Hong Kong Museum of Art (HKMOA)
The Hong Kong Museum of Art is the first and main art museum of Hong Kong, located on Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. I love coming here to find inspiration because it houses an art collection of over 17,000 items – from unique and colourful pop art pieces to historical relics. This place is definitely worth the visit!
Sky100
I love coming here after a nice meal at Tin Lung Heen restaurant and marvel at the stunning panoramic view of the city. For those of you who may not know, Sky100 is a 360-degree indoor observation deck that offers sweeping views of Hong Kong Island, Victoria Harbour, the Kowloon Peninsula, and Tai Mo Shan.
Victoria Peak
Another picture-perfect spot is Victoria Peak, a hill on the western half of Hong Kong Island that offers iconic views of Victoria Harbour against a stunning backdrop of skyscrapers. Sindart had a store there in 2012 but it has closed down since, so it holds significant meaning for me. If you are planning to make a visit, late afternoon is the best time for Victoria Peak. For an optimal half-day trip, go there in the middle or late afternoon so you can get there when it is cooler and see the sunset and evening views.
Victoria Harbour
If you are a first-time visitor to Hong Kong, then taking a star ferry from Hong Kong to Kowloon side is a must. Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour has an ethereal beauty that is unparalleled during anytime of the day but if you want the best pictures, go during the golden hour.
Sino Center, Mong Kok
I am a huge fan of Japanese anime so I enjoy perusing through shelves upon shelves of manga (Japanese comics) inside this shopping center, located along Nathan Road between Soy and Dundas Streets. Here, you can find an array of unique shops selling everything from Japanese comics and video games to limited-edition toys and figurines.
